A liberal arts education from Saint Michael’s can prepare you well for a career in medicine and the health sciences. It combines a strong science background with courses that build your intellectual skills and critical reasoning capabilities, as well as provide you with a breadth of understanding of different ways of knowing and thinking. As a result, Saint Michael’s students have over an 85 percent acceptance rate at medical, dental, and veterinary schools.
Curriculum
Students interested in a career in the health sciences follow a curriculum that provides all the courses necessary to gain admission to medical, dental or other allied health graduate programs. Many students interested in a health career choose to major in one of the sciences; however, students who choose a non-science major can take the courses that are required in preparation for the various pre-medical or allied health graduate programs as electives.
Special Opportunities
Special advising is provided to students interested in health careers, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, podiatry, optometry, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant and public health careers. Faculty members assist students in their course selection, their graduate school application process, and their preparation for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Dental Admission Test (DAT), or Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Saint Michael’s has a special agreement with the Doctor of Pharmacy program at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, which has a campus nearby in Colchester. Through this agreement, the ACPHS assures interviews each year to qualified Saint Michael’s College students. Saint Michael’s students also have the option to major in Pre-Pharmacy, a dual-degree program with ACPHS.
