¿Qué aprenderé?

The State University of New York at New Paltz offers a 30-36 credit Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Humanistic/Multicultural Education, which provides students with understandings and skills to promote social justice, restorative practices, and equity in a wider variety of educational settings.

The program integrates intellectual/cognitive and social/emotional learning through an experiential and participatory process. Students increase self-knowledge and develop effective human relations and critical thinking skills. The program offers a self-reflective, process-oriented approach to diversity and issues of social justice. Students learn to work cooperatively with others to foster personal, institutional, and social change and promote more humane, democratic, and inclusive classrooms, organizations, and communities.

Participants enrolled in the MPS will have the opportunity to:

Heighten self-knowledge and personal awareness
Facilitate large and small group processes
Develop curriculum and program designs
Integrate cognitive and social/emotional domains in teaching, learning, program planning, and staff development
Promote cooperative and inclusive groups
Provide leadership for innovation and change in educational and human service settings
Implement multicultural, gender-fair practices in their work settings and communities
Foster personal, institutional, and social change to promote diversity and social justice goals

The 30-Credit General Program (070G)

Prospective benefactors of this program of study include those working in community colleges and other educational settings, group homes, child care centers, social justice organizations, cooperative extension services, community-based recreation and education programs, youth agencies, women’s and LBGTQ centers, hospitals, and other human service agencies that offer education as well as clinical services. Initially certified teachers in K-12 educational settings with an interest in multicultural/social justice education may apply to the program as well. Initially certified K-12 teachers seeking professional certification should speak with Program Coordinator, Shannon McManimon for more information.

The flexible 30-credit general program allows for the development of an individualized plan of study unique to varying professional goals by providing a wide variety of electives. The program can be tailored for persons working with special client groups providing the opportunity to focus their study in the following areas: Not-for-Profit, Higher Education, and International Community Growth and Change. Internship opportunities are available for interested students.

All undergraduate and graduate course work; the baccalaureate transcript should be from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The degree should contain appropriate courses in the special subject area of certification.

English Language Proficiency: TOEFL ibt: 80; IELTS: 6.5; PTE Academic: 53.

Application Deadlines: For Fall - Review begins: 4/15, for Spring - Review begins: 10/15 and Summer - Review begins: 4/15.
