At ISU we are dedicated to your success as a graduate student. The graduate program in rural sociology provides an award-winning education. Graduate students in sociology develop the capability for original and creative research. Students engage in either independent or group research under the direction of faculty members. Preparation for the graduate degree is not confined to formal class work and activity on research projects. Students also work toward intellectual independence while developing an integrated grasp of the field. We encourage you to explore.

Learning Goals that students in this program are expected to meet include:

Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of scholarly literature in the one of the department’s program areas.

The ability to articulate research objectives (e.g., form testable hypotheses) that, when met, will lead to meaningful contributions to the field of sociology.

Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research using appropriate methods of acquisition, analysis, and reporting of data.

Demonstrate the ability to interpret research results appropriately and integrate them into the existing knowledge in the discipline.

Demonstrate the ability to clearly and accurately communicate research findings orally and in writing, including in conference presentations, peer-reviewed scientific journals, and/or in the classroom.

Conduct scholarship, in teams or with independence, in ways that consistently demonstrate ethical practice and professionalism.

Requerimiento de entrada

Para estudiantes de Estados Unidos

Students must hold a bachelor degree from an accredited institution in the US or an approved institution overseas. GPA equivalent to 3.0/4.0 or above.

Para estudiantes internacionales

Iowa State requires a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university prior to beginning graduate studies.

International degrees must be comparable to a US bachelor’s degree or higher from a college or university regionally accredited/recognized by the Ministry of Education in that country.

A minimum cumulative grade point average equivalent to at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (B grade) is required for admission.

The minimum scores accepted by the Graduate College are:

Internet Based TOEFL (iBT): 100
TOEFL Paper (PBT): 600
IELTS: 6.5
Pearson Test of English (PTE): 53
Duo Lingo English Test: 105

Application Deadlines: January 10 for Fall enrollment (this includes current ISU student applicants). The Rural Sociology program no longer admits students during Spring term.
