¿Qué aprenderé?

Dig into your interest in mathematics while enhancing your research skills and job preparedness. PSU's master's degree in Mathematics prepares you for a career in community college teaching, industrial work in mathematics, or continued doctoral studies.

You'll deepen your knowledge of mathematics, both pure and applied, and explore its use in real-world applications through rigorous coursework and research projects.

Our alumni are accepted to Ph.D. programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, and other fields, and are in high demand for a range of jobs, including instructors at high schools and community colleges, software engineers, operations research analysts, financial planners, and investment analysts.

WHY PSU?

We offer a wide variety of courses in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and you'll have the opportunity to choose an emphasis in one or more of these areas.

Our coursework combines advanced training in the core subjects such as analysis, algebra, number theory, set theory and topology, and graph theory, with courses in computational and applied mathematics subjects such as numerical analysis, mathematical optimization, differential equations, partial differential equations, mathematical control theory, and mathematical modeling.

You'll have the opportunity to hone your skills as a researcher with a required research project. Working closely with a faculty advisor, you'll read current mathematical literature in an area of your choice, prepare a research paper, and present the research in a colloquium.

Our excellent faculty bring their expertise and cutting-edge research into your classes. They have strong connections to local industry, and are leading researchers on topics such as algebra and discrete mathematics, analysis, computational mathematics, dynamical systems, differential equations and control, mathematics education, mathematical physics, statistics and applied probability, and topology and geometry.

Research seminars, both department-wide and subject-specific, take place throughout the year, providing you with opportunities to explore mathematical topics and applications outside your classes.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS?

Most alumni go on to become teachers at high schools and community colleges, find jobs in business and industry, or pursue doctoral studies.

Recent graduates have been accepted to Ph.D. programs at Portland State University, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, University of British Columbia, and Michigan State University.

With a master's degree in mathematics from PSU, you'll also be sought after for jobs in industry that involve signal processing, computer graphics, risk management, system reliability, software testing and verification, database systems, production line optimization, and market research.
