Biophysics is a major area of study and research in the life sciences, attracting diverse students and faculty with a wide variety of research interests within a cohesive environment. The field of Biophysics has been well represented at UC Riverside and continues to grow. UCR offers a Ph.D. in Biophysics as well as an M.S. degree. The interdepartmental graduate program in Biophysics has participating faculty from the departments of Biochemistry; Bioengineering; Biomedical Sciences; Botany and Plant Sciences; Chemistry; Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology; Mathematics; and Physics and Astronomy.

The goal of the program is to promote teaching, training and research in the field of Biophysics. Areas of specialization include biological electron transfer, computational/ mathematical modeling of biological systems, structural biology, neurobiophysics, imaging and protein engineering. Biophysicists are needed by institutions of higher learning, and by federal, state and private research organizations.

A bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution. The degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent in subject matter and scholarship to that offered by the University of California. A minimum of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or B-equivalent (if GPA is not on a 4.0 scale). We recommend that you check with the graduate program as they may have a higher standard for their GPA requirements. If your GPA is below this, follow up with the graduate program you are interested. Applications are reviewed in their entirety and the program can look at your other components and advise you on potential admission.

Para estudiantes internacionales

Students must have a B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemistry, Physics or in a related field from an accredited institution and an academic record that satisfies the minimum admission standards established by the UCR Graduate Division.

English Language Requirement: TOEFL - The minimum acceptable scores are: 550 for the revised TOEFL paper-delivered test and 80 for the TOEFL iBT; IELTS - The minimum acceptable overall score is 7 with no score less than 6 on any individual component.

Application deadline: Summer - March 1st; Fall - June 1st; Winter - September 1st; Spring - December 1st.
