There is a growing need for qualified statistical analyses of the ever-increasing amounts of data collected in business, industry, and government. The Certificates in Applied Statistics program is designed to give students a strong background in statistical methodology and data analysis in preparation for opportunities in the work force or for graduate studies.
Students will gain competence in such topics as descriptive statistics, estimation, confidence intervals, probability and inferential techniques, simple and multiple regression, analysis of variance, and more-advanced topics. Students can focus on a particular application area such as economics, psychology, sociology, geology or environmental science through the choice of an elective course and the data analysis project.
Students completing this certificate will have essential competencies in several areas related to analysis of data:
Understand probability and statistics in order to quantify uncertainty
Build complex models for finding patterns and explaining data
Students will be able to orally present their statistical methods or results, or that of others, with the aid of relevant presentation software (PowerPoint, LaTeX) as appropriate.
Students will be able to present statistical methods or results in writing, utilizing the appropriate conventions of the discipline. This may involve summary and analysis of the statistical methods or results of others, development (including proof) of their own methods, or both.
