The School of Education has as a primary mission to prepare P-12 classroom teachers and higher education leaders within Arkansas as well as the region. The mission of the School of Education is to make scholarly and professional contributions to the communities in central Arkansas as well as the academic community more broadly. We commit our combined resources and expertise to promoting best practices in the broad range of educational contexts we represent as well as to the discovery and communication of knowledge in the field of education. We are dedicated to promoting and supporting learning communities that are diverse and equitable and that approach problem solving with both innovation and collaboration.

The Educational Specialist degree in reading is a 36-credit-hour program of study designed to prepare candidates for a leadership role in literacy-related areas, including literacy curriculum specialists, literacy coaches, teacher leaders, literacy supervisors, teacher educators, and other leadership roles in reading instruction.

The Ed.S. In reading requires a minimum of 36 hours beyond the master’s degree, including six hours in research, 15 hours of emphasis requirements in reading, and nine hours of reading electives. The candidate is expected to design and implement a research project as a culminating experience.

Students must baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution with substantially the same undergraduate program as at UALR (typically at least 120 hours or the equivalent of a 4-year baccalaureate degree). They are required to have 2.75 cumulative GPA; most programs will also require a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 undergraduate hours (including post-baccalaureate hours); and have TOEFL score of 525 on paper-based.

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

International applicants must meet the following requirements in addition to the regular admission standards listed above.

Although the board policy (502.6) requires a score of 71 on the Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT), International Student Services suggests requiring a score > 79 on the IBT or 6.5 on the IELTS, which is a common practice at the graduate level at UA Little Rock.
