The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) is ranked among the top 10 microbiology departments in the country. We are proud of our internationally recognized faculty—whose research funding, in total, is among the highest in the nation; and whose research spans the disciplines of structural biology, cell biology, bacterial physiology, bacterial development and gene regulation, bacterial pathogenesis, virology and viral pathogenesis, molecular and cellular parasitology, immunology, molecular genetics, stem cell biology, cancer biology, and computational biology. We leverage this scientific diversity—along with our partnerships with other institutes, centers and departments at UCLA—to further cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research and enrich teaching. Major Fields or Sub disciplines

Graduate Programs in Biosciences is a consortium of Ph.D. programs organized into specialized research groups called Home Areas, which serve as the admissions and training units associated with degree-granting programs. Each participating Ph.D. program is now associated with at least one of the new Home Areas in Graduate Programs in Bioscience.

The Molecular Biology Interdepartmental Program includes the following four Home Areas:

(2) Cell & Developmental Biology

(3) Gene Regulation

(4) Immunity, Microbes, & Molecular Pathogenesis
