The Graduate Program in English is a 5-6 year straight-to-PhD program. The main objective of the Doctor of Philosophy in English is to prepare students to be productive scholars and excellent teachers of English studies. To achieve this goal, we offer an ambitious range of courses in literature, literary theory, cultural studies, film studies, material culture, rhetoric and composition, environmental humanities, and digital humanities. Students receive rigorous training in methods of literary research and are encouraged to publish their work in scholarly and professional journals as part of their studies. Our program offers exceptional support in three research focus areas, or “tracks”: print and material culture, race and ethnicity, and transatlantic/transnational studies. Graduate students and faculty often meet to share and discuss their scholarly work outside the classroom through colloquia, guest lectures, and reading groups. Pedagogical training and apprenticeships in the teaching of writing and literature also prepares students to teach a variety of courses.
