¿Qué aprenderé?

The Educational Research and Evaluation (EDRE) program is a comprehensive Ph.D. program that provides preparation in research methodology as it relates to education, the behavioral sciences, and the social sciences in general. It emphasizes the areas of evaluation/assessment, measurement, qualitative methods, and statistics, and EDRE students specialize in one of these four areas. Thus, EDRE students have the opportunity to develop methodological expertise in areas that include (a) the development and application of statistical methods in educational and social scientific research, (b) the development and evaluation of psychoeducational instruments, (c) the development and application of qualitative methods in educational and social scientific research, and (d) the development and application of evaluation/assessment methods in educational and social scientific research. To provide EDRE students with a wide range of methodological skills, they also complete a 24 credit hour, core group of research methods courses that include each of the above four areas. The EDRE program requires students to be enrolled full time for two consecutive, regular academic year semesters on the Blacksburg campus.

Methodologists specialize in specific research methodologies. Their work normally includes using specific research methodologies to conduct empirical research, conducting research to advance existing research methodologies, and conducting research to develop new, cutting-edge research methodologies. EDRE faculty and students conduct methodological research and applied research on issues in education, the behavioral sciences, and the social sciences in general. The EDRE program was established in 1971 and was the first Ph.D. program in educational research in the State of Virginia.

The EDRE program prepares students for careers as research methodologists in a wide range of capacities that include academic positions in education, psychology, or applied statistics; positions in the testing industry (e.g., ETS, ACT, CTB, Pearson); evaluation and assessment positions in higher education; state- or federal-level government positions that involve program evaluation, data analysis, instrument development, and/or survey administration; and positions as private methodological consultants.
