Learning Outcomes

The Mathematics major has the following learning outcomes:

Strong mathematical content knowledge of single and multivariate differential and integral calculus, and differential equations

Ability to synthesize material, solves problems, and think abstractly

Familiarity with linear algebra, techniques of proof, and foundations of real analysis

Ability to perform basic computer programming, especially in C++

Preparation for the Major

Required: Mathematics 31A or 31AL, 31B, 32A, 32B, 33A, 33B, Physics 1A, Program in Computing 10A, and two courses from Chemistry and Biochemistry 20A, 20B, Economics 11, Life Sciences 7A, Philosophy 31, 132, Physics 1B, 1C, 5B, 5C. Each course must be taken for a letter grade. The mathematics sequenced courses (Mathematics 31A or 31AL, 31B, 32A, 32B, 33A, 33B) are calculated separately from the other preparation for the major courses and must be completed with a minimum overall 2.5 grade-point average and a grade of C or better in each course. The other preparation courses must be completed with a minimum overall 2.0 grade-point average and a grade of C− or better in each course.

Students must have a minimum score of 550 in paper based TOEFL. Students who have attended school under the British system must present five GCSE/Ordinary-Level examinations and at least three Advanced-Level examinations with superior grades.

Para estudiantes internacionales

To be considered for admission to UCLA, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country.

English language proficiency is critical to your success at UCLA. Applicants, whose first language, or language of instruction for at least the last three years, is not English, are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS).

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A competitive score is above 100 (with sub-scores above 22)

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A competitive score is 7 or higher.
