Cloud computing, big data, and Internet of Things (IoT) have dramatically impacted use of geospatial data. The GIS+CS degree at UNT addresses these needs by producing graduates who understand the complexities of geospatial data and are able to leverage computing techniques to convert such data into meaningful information. Graduates can expect to find jobs as GIS Engineers, GIS Systems Analysts, GIS Solutions Engineers, and GIS Application Programmers. Such positions typically tend to be part of IT/GIS departments in federal/state/local governments, real estate, logistics, retail, defense, infrastructure, energy, among others.
Requirements
The GIS+CS major requires 46 hours, 28 in CS and 18 in GIS. There are 13 hours in the CS Core, 18 hours in the GIS Core, and 15 hours of CS Electives. Within the degree, for the CS electives students may choose to adopt a Track in mainstream CS or in IT. Alternatively, students may choose not to adopt a track and may select broadly from the CS upper division courses to meet the 15-hour CS elective requirement. Beyond the degree requirements, students may choose an Optional Subject Concentration in areas such as health, environment, urban studies, or water resources.
