One of the most significant issues facing an individual and their family is how to management and protect of their assets, income and investments. The U.S. economy has transitioned from a one where people retire securely with a pension after spending a lifetime with an employer. We are now in a world of defined contribution plans where each individual is responsible for creating and managing their own retirement program. Additionally, navigating the worlds of taxes, insurance, education funding, all compound the stress we all face. Individuals and their families need advice from professionals who are able to integrate all aspects of personal finance. These include insurance, investments, employee benefits, taxes, and estate planning. That is role of the personal financial planner.

Related Experiences

The goal of the Personal Financial Planning major is to provide a comprehensive educational experience to prepare graduates for the Certified Financial Planners, CFP®, exam and certification process. Most of our students participate in networking events that lead to internships or part time employment in the financial planning field. This experience allows them to quickly become professionals in the area of financial planning.

Networking with professionals in the field is an essential part of the education program. Students majoring in Personal Financial Planning receive free membership in the Hampton Roads chapter of the Financial Planners Association, the FPA. Membership entitles students to attend the monthly chapter speakers and breakfasts.

Traditional freshman applicants are typically under the age of 21 and currently enrolled in high school or have graduated from high school within the past two years and have not attended any regionally accredited college or university (not to include dual enrollment).

English proficiency test scores: TOEFL of 79 (550 paper based); IELTS overall band of 6.5; PTE score of 53; new SAT Reading Test of 26 or SAT Critical Reading of 480; GRE Verbal Reasoning of 152; GCSE or GCE “O” level pass in English language; CPE grade of A, B, or C.
