Program Overview

As a biology major, you'll unlock the mysteries of even the most complex life forms. You'll start by understanding the simplest building blocks every organism shares. In this concentration, you'll learn about interactions on a molecular level. As you apply them to cellular and physiological processes, you'll also learn advanced lab techniques and participate in research projects.

Why This Program & What You'll Learn

Every life form, from single-celled organisms to humans, is governed by a set of processes that guide basic functions. That biology depends on a set of molecular interactions that form the building blocks of life.

Your own building blocks as a biologist start here. Our biology major with a biomedical, cellular and molecular concentration prepares you for success in graduate or medical school; you'll be ready to take the MCAT, GRE or DAT as you pursue advanced degrees. You'll also be ready to go on to careers in health, laboratory or research-based settings with universities, state or national science-based agencies, and pharmaceutical or industrial companies.

As you build your knowledge, you'll have the opportunity to work side-by-side with expert faculty on research projects. And you'll do so while building your lab techniques in our state-of-the-art facilities, including a 5,000-square-foot aquatic vivarium and an herbarium with more than 26,000 samples.

Program Highlights

As a student in the biology: biomedical, cellular, and molecular program, you will:

Learn advanced techniques in genetics, cell biology, physiology and molecular biology, and work with faculty who are on the cutting edge of their fields in our new $95 million, 169,000-square-foot Biosciences Building, which opened in 2016.

Study at a Carnegie-classified doctoral research institution, which means we do advanced research in microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology and genetics. And you'll get to work with the faculty who are behind those projects.

Compete for more than $60,000 in scholarships offered by the biology department each year.
