Write and develop your songs, receive feedback from professional songwriters, and collaborate with other lyricists and composers. You’ll benefit from one-on-one, private lessons with faculty members while you complete rigorous academic studies in both music and liberal arts.
You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses, as well as music core courses (music theory, music history, aural comprehension, and keyboard skills), and music specialization courses, working closely with renowned composition faculty.
You'll take courses in song writing history and criticism, studio production skills and techniques, the business structure of the music industry, recording technology, and related fields, while learning how to use industry-standard music technology.
Experiential Learning
You will have multiple opportunities to have your concert works performed in concerts, residencies, and readings by NYU performance groups. You'll collaborate with performers, dancers, and actors in NYU Steinhardt's Music Technology, Jazz Studies, and Instrumental and Vocal Performance programs, as well as with other New York City musicians and artists.
You'll also participate in our weekly Composers Forum, where you will meet and work with world-renowned composers and performers, prepare two student showcases per semester, and attend highlights in the New York City new music concert season.
You'll have the unique opportunities to study music abroad at NYU Prague or NYU Paris, receiving specialized music training in music composition, music history and theory, music performance, and other related topics of study.
