¿Qué aprenderé?

The Department of Music is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music and offers the Bachelor of Music with specializations in jazz performance, music business, music education, music performance, music theory/composition, and musical theater. The department also offers the Bachelor of Arts with specializations in music, and music history and literature.

The Department of Music faculty believe students in undergraduate academic programs in music should receive a comprehensive musical background that includes cultural knowledge through the general education program, individual performance, ensemble performance, scholarly studies in music theory and history/literature, and teacher education courses, if appropriate. The intent is to develop skilled and informed musicians, able scholars, and competent and enthusiastic teachers.

The Bachelor of Arts, designed for students who wish to specialize in music within a liberal arts curriculum, may serve as the foundation for advanced studies in music. The Bachelor of Music curriculum in the College of Arts and Sciences prepares students for professional careers and advanced graduate study in music performance and music education.

Students specializing in music performance will:

Develop their technique and musicianship through the study and performance of music from various periods and genres

Become familiar with the many aspects of the performance profession

Be prepared to apply for continued study in a master's program at numerous quality institutions. Especially gifted students will be prepared for immediate entry into the professional arena as performers and teachers

Investigate an expanded array of professional opportunities

Be prepared for professional careers in music through participation in performances, lectures, master classes and cultural exchanges

Career Opportunities

A degree in music may lead to many interesting and productive careers in music and music-related fields. Some of the career opportunities available to graduates of the bachelor’s degree programs in music include teaching in public and private schools; playing professionally in symphony orchestras, studio orchestras, and jazz groups; performing in choruses, recitals, operas, oratorios and musical theater; composing and arranging. Additional opportunities exist in music publishing, music management and sales, music criticism, music librarianship, and private studio teaching.
