An essential skill for those entering the 21st century workforce is to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish with Spanish speakers in the U.S. and abroad. The Spanish major introduces students to important structures of the Spanish language and builds intercultural competence. Upper division Spanish coursework integrates cultural studies, literary studies, and linguistics. In addition, students participate in different experiential opportunities to study the Spanish language and the Latino culture within the context of the classroom and Latino communities in Michigan, the United States, and abroad.
The Spanish major is designed to help students reach advanced levels of proficiency in Spanish on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
Madonna University's Spanish program is focused on building students' communicative proficiency in Spanish and intercultural competence to prepare graduates for the global workforce. The Spanish coursework introduces students to the vocabulary and structures of the language, as well as cultural traditions of various Spanish-speaking places world-wide. We offer a two different Spanish majors: 1) Spanish and 2) Spanish for Teacher Certification. The Spanish program offers service-learning courses, independent research opportunities, participation in professional conferences, and study abroad opportunities. Students also have the opportunity to earn certificates that combine language skills and cultural knowledge with other disciplines, such as Spanish for Law Enforcement and Spanish for Medical Settings.
