¿Qué aprenderé?

The History Program offers students a broad liberal arts foundation that deepens their knowledge and understanding of the world, stimulates effective participation in contemporary society, and cultivates mental skills required for success in a wide range of employment areas or graduate study.

The rewards of historical study include a disciplined intellect, a well-furnished imagination, and recognition of both the unity and diversity of the human experience.

Coursework includes a core of history courses—plus electives selected from the following areas:

  • Ancient, early modern and modern European history
  • United States history
  • History of the wider world: Mediterranean, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America

Optional concentrations are offered in Mediterranean history and in public and applied history.

Relatively small class sizes enable students to work one-on-one with talented and dedicated faculty members.

History majors are encouraged to consider the University's Honors Program and study abroad programs, which range from summer programs to a single semester or a full academic year in over 56 countries. The department also coordinates an exchange program with the University of Malta, which is part of the Mediterranean history concentration.

A number of activities and organizations are available that enable students to interact with other students and professionals, including the History Club and Phi Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History.

Careers

A major in history provides the knowledge and skills needed in many walks of life. Many businesses and organizations prefer to hire history and other liberal arts graduates for management positions because of their intellectual and communication skills.

In addition, the history major provides a sound background for graduate school and professional studies.
