About our programmes

We offer three types of research degree: PhD, MSc by Thesis and MRes Research Methods in Psychology.

The MSc by Thesis is one year full-time (or two years part-time). You will research and write a 50,000 word thesis on a topic in which we are able to offer supervision. Alongside your research you will complete research training modules (minimum 20 credits) from the Postgraduate Training Scheme run by the Doctoral College.

The MRes Research Methods in Psychology comprises 60 taught credits and a 30,000 word research thesis. The taught credits are gained through completion of two compulsory modules covering advanced quantitative research methods and other professional research skills, alongside one elective module (from a choice of three) chosen based on the student’s training needs.

The majority of our taught Masters programmes / research Masters programmes and PhDs require that you hold a qualification equivalent to an upper second-class Bachelor Honours (or 2.1), although some programmes, especially PhDs may have higher entry requirements. We generally consider a Bachelors degree awarded by a nationally recognised higher education institution in the USA to be comparable to a UK Bachelor Honours degree. Lower second-class (2.2) equivalent - GPA 2.5 out of 4 or 3.0 out of 5, Upper second-class (2.1) equivalent - GPA 3.0 out of 4 or 3.7 out of 5. International English Language Testing System (IELTS)- Academic Test (all test centres) 6.0 overall (with a minimum 5.5 in each skill) 5.5 overall with 5.5 in each skill accepted for entry to degrees with integrated foundation year.

Para estudiantes internacionales

You should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or international equivalent) in psychology or a related discipline. This course requires academic IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill. TOEFL iBT: 78 overall with at least - Reading 10, Listening 9, Speaking 17, Writing 19.
