¿Qué aprenderé?

**Overview**Have you ever wondered why development projects don’t always work? Or benefit some people, but not others? Have you felt uncomfortable about the way that people are depicted in fundraising campaigns, and wondered if there’s a better way to do this? Have you noticed how development as a sector is characterized by power relations and by politically contested processes of change and wondered how you would navigate through this? Do you feel you lack the critical skills, as well as the practical skills and experience, to make a difference? Learn to tackle these big questions – and many more – in our BA International Development Management. **About This Course**This course is about preparing you to achieve your goals in global development. You’ll be grounded in the management techniques and concepts needed to work effectively in the modern development sector. For example, you will learn what it takes to run an advocacy campaign, deliver a health services project, or manage a small charity or an evaluation team. You’ll demonstrate familiarity with and the ability to use key planning, management, monitoring, evaluation and communication tools. The course will give you the opportunities to develop the skills and techniques you have learned in a real life setting through our development work placement module. Not only will this contextualize and ground what you have learned, it will also boost your employability and help you reflect on your own positioning within the sector. In addition to this practical focus, you’ll gain a broad grounding in the key issues, organisations and practices of development, fusing insights from management with those from across the social sciences, including anthropology, economics, environmental sciences, media, and politics. You can develop your understanding of particular regions in the world, through area modules relating to sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or Latin America, and you can pursue your emerging interests in other aspects and perspectives of development. The result is an extremely flexible degree programme that you can tailor to suit your particular interests, and that allows you to combine an interdisciplinary foundation with your niche specialism. By studying with us, you’ll join our close-knit academic community, made up of experts from across multiple disciplines, all housed within the School of International Development. As such, you will not only learn from our world-renowned development professionals within the School, but you can benefit from a truly vibrant, interdisciplinary environment. We are amongst the best in the world for researching, teaching, and practicing development. Come and study with us and help us to create a fairer world. It is mandatory for this course to take the Development Work Placement module, where you will spend 2-4 months in a relevant work placement in the summer between your second and third year. You are expected to identify the placement yourself, although with considerable support. If you have not been able to, you will be given the option to transfer onto another relevant three-year programme. **Disclaimer**Course details are subject to change.
