Imagine reading the first ever work of a Christian woman, examining Henry VIII’s armour, or considering the social and political power of African American jazz. This is just a glimpse of the sort of primary material you’ll come face-to-face with on a History degree at UEA. You’ll be able to pursue your passion for the past as you learn from world experts, debating the very latest research and studying primary sources in a region that is steeped in history. As you develop your understanding of the unfolding history of humanity, you will also cultivate a more critical awareness of the problems of the present. You’ll grow your research and analytical skills, and learn to develop and communicate your own ideas. You’ll graduate with a host of skills that will be invaluable in the workplace or for postgraduate study.
About This Course
In our School of History, you’ll be taught by cutting-edge specialists and discover their latest world-leading research. UEA is acknowledged to be at the forefront of History research in the UK, and in the Times Higher Education Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 Analysis, UEA was ranked 3rd overall in the UK for research quality in History. We have particular strengths in British, European, and global history, the Atlantic world, the Middle East and Landscape. Whether you’re interested in all areas of historical study or looking forward to developing new specialisms, in your second and third years you will be able to tailor your degree by choosing from a huge range of optional modules. And you’ll be able to broaden your horizons even further with modules from other disciplines including English literature, languages and politics. Whichever path you choose, you’ll develop a knowledge of the deep connections between history, memory and the past and the present. You will learn to explore and understand the forces that shape the modern world, be they political, economic, social or cultural. You’ll come to understand how knowledge is constructed and manipulated – how history is written – and you will engage with its interpretation and debate. On History with a Placement Year, you’ll normally spend 9-12 months of your third year in a placement, gaining invaluable working experience and employability skills in a relevant area of your choice.
