Learn about the ways in which living things interact with their environment and apply this knowledge to tackling the biggest challenges facing the world today with a professional placement year.Get the skills you need for a career in ecology or wildlife conservation through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience in the field. You will learn to apply knowledge of ecosystems to environmental issues such as habitat conservation, the biological control of diseases, and the protection of the world's rarest plants and creatures.Most of our staff are actively engaged in research, and our work on wildlife ecology and conservation feeds into undergraduate teaching. You will also have the opportunity to take part in original research with a potentially global impact.Reading’s award-winning campus is home to over a thousand different animal species and is extremely useful for learning fieldwork skills. It offers multiple habitats for study, including lakes, hay meadows and woodlands, and allows you to step straight from the laboratory to the field. The University also owns a number of large farms, which can be used as sites for final year projects.Take the opportunity to practise species identification and ecology skills through field trips to Spain and the tropics. This will enable you to study biodiversity in habitats such as arid landscapes, forests and oceans, as well as in your home habitat on our award-winning, ecologically diverse green campus.You will complete a year-long industrial placement between the second and final years, in order to gain valuable industry experience. You can also choose to do a short placement module.We have strong links with a number of ecological organisations including the RSPB, Environment Agency, and a range of wildlife trusts. There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved with local wildlife and conservation groups including Conserve Reading on Wednesdays (CROW) and Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT).Students in previous years have worked at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, RSPB and Environment Agency. You can also choose to spend a year abroad, typically carrying out research for an academic institute.Our department has a dedicated academic in charge of placements, who can provide you with advice and support.**Careers** You will develop your communication, information handling, numeracy and problem-solving skills. You can also become a member of the Society of Biology and apply for Chartered Biologist status following graduation.Work as a trainee in a non-governmental conservation organisation or ecological consultancy. Or, you could find a role within the government or a government-funded agency, in an area such as pollution mitigation. You may also decide to become a conservation biologist and typically carry out practical conservation, management or fundraising for local wildlife trusts. Specialist expertise gained from the course can also apply to a career in the media.You will also be well-placed to move into research or academia, or pursue further studies.

Students with US High School Diploma with GPA of 3.0/4.0 will be considered for entry onto International Foundation Programme. We do accept several combinations of qualifications for students who completed the High School Diploma but generally we consider the following common combinations: High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and grades ranging from 444 - 555 in three Advanced placement tests Or High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and scores ranging from 600 - 700 in three SAT Subjects Tests. A levels/AS levels or International Baccalaureate (IB) or other International qualications will also be considered. Please refer the university website for details of the English Language requirements for entry to individual undergraduate degree programmes.
