The year gives you the academic and technical preparation for undergraduate study in a wide range of social sciences subjects. Lectures, labs and tutorials will give you a broad understanding across subjects including economics, criminology, sociology and psychology.**About this course**This course explores the way societies understand crime and deviance and how they seek to secure social order, social justice, and social control. Across the course, you’ll consider how cultural and social values, life experiences and social inequalities are shaped by the social and global environments. You’ll consider how practices and attitudes of policing respond to social events and shifts in cultural attitudes and consider the ways the media can influence individuals’ perceptions of crime and its causes.You’ll also study the criminal justice system in England and Wales, explore issues of discrimination in the criminal justice system and how social structures and institutions can disadvantage and marginalise groups in society. And you’ll draw global comparisons, considering the ways in which protests, political action, criminal activity, and policing, transcend national borders.The course also offers opportunities for you to gain valuable work experience with victim support agencies, advocacy groups, justice campaigns, international charities and NGOs via a work placement module.**Future Skills** Embedded within every course curriculum and throughout the whole Kingston experience, Future Skills will play a role in shaping you to become a future-proof graduate, providing you with the skills most valued by employers such as problem-solving, digital competency, and adaptability.
