Be taught by experts in their fields and learn about the molecular foundation of life itself. Biochemistry is at the forefront of understanding how molecules control and affect life, and an appreciation of these concepts allows biochemists to answer life’s fundamental questions and contribute to resolving critical biological problems such as designing drugs to treat cancer or even bacteria that can clean up an oil spill.We have a purpose-built microbiology building and our facilities include tissue culture suites, multicolour flow cytometry, real-time PCR, digital gel scanning and documentation, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, ultra-centrifuges and equipment for the large-scale growth and harvesting of microbial and animal cells.A speciality of the degree is in the biochemistry of disease and you will discover how it affects the body at a molecular level, as well as how drugs and other treatments work.There is a strong practical element to the course and you will learn and develop skills in carrying out fundamental cellular, molecular and biochemical techniques, including live cell microscopy, DNA and protein technology, microbial and molecular genetics, and cell culture.Optional field courses run throughout the degree with previous locations including Devon, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Iceland and Colombia. In your final year, there is the opportunity to engage in an 11-week research project where you can apply your skills and knowledge to a biochemical research question.We support and provide advice on finding placements during your time with us, with previous students having undertaken paid vacation studentships funded by external organisations such as the Wellcome Trust and the Biochemical Society.**Careers**The subject-specific and transferable skills and knowledge that this course equips you with are well regarded in both the scientific and non-scientific job sectors, opening up a wide range of career paths to you. Science-related careers can be in the areas of laboratory work, science sales and management, science communication and patenting, or you may decide to take up a research career or move into further study.Recent graduates from this course have gone to find work with the Medical Research Council, Royal Berkshire Hospital, Boots and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Students need to have High School Diploma with GPA of 3.0 and a minimum score of 1850 combined in the SAT Reasoning Test and one of the following: A minimum score of 4 in two Group A Advanced Placement tests or A minimum score of 600 in two different SAT Subject Tests or A mixture of SAT Subject Tests and AP Tests with scores at these levels. OR Students need High School Diploma with GPA of 3.0 and a score of at least 28 on the ACT Test and one of the following: A score of 4 or higher in two Group A Advanced Placement tests or A minimum score of 600 o in two different SAT Subject Tests or A mixture of SAT Subject Tests and AP Tests with scores at these levels will also be considered. Grades may vary depending upon the course chosen.
