¿Qué aprenderé?

The research degree provides training in a particular subject area through independent investigation, study and experimental work, culminating in the submission of a thesis on the research undertaken. A supervisor or supervisors will be appointed for each candidate. Candidates are required to attend appropriate lectures and sit for written examinations.

Students not only acquire in-depth knowledge of Chinese Studies, they would possess the ability to pursue independent research in his/her proposed field of advanced study. Supervision is available in the following areas: Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Translation between Chinese and English, Southeast Asian Chinese Studies etc.

PhD programme requires a good Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, or at least a Second Class Upper Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. English Language Requirements: TOEFL scores for Internet Based Test (IBT) is 90; or IELTS score of 6.0. 

Para estudiantes internacionales

Students intending to read PhD by research must fulfil any of the following: A good Masters degree in a relevant discipline; or An NUS Honours degree (at least Distinction/Second Class and above) or equivalent (e.g., a four-year Bachelors degree with at least an average grade of B or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, subject to approval by the Faculty, on a case-by-case basis.

English Language Requirements: Minimum TOEFL score is required: 85 for the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 22 for the writing section); or 580 for the paper-based test; or 237 for the computer-based test; IELTS result of 6.0 is required.
