The future for product and system design is unlimited. With a Master's Degree in Product and System Design you can be part of moulding the offshore-future.

This programme of study focuses on the design of ship equipment and maritime systems. Despite the focus on the maritime, the applied design methods are generic, and can be applied to other industries.

Programme components

You can either take this master's degree programme as a discipline oriented master degree (120 ECTS) over two years or as a experience-based master degree (90 ECTS) over one and a half years.

Job prospects

There is nothing more global than maritime activities, and specialists in maritime systems and operations have the world as a workplace. Students that are already employed by a company, can work on tasks initiated by the industry through the study. This way, linking the relevant challenges from business to theory, NTNU in Alesund will put you in touch with the maritime industry.

As a graduate in this program the student can look forward to working with challenges connected to the design, simulation and operation of maritime systems, meeting both the strict economic requirements and the environmental goals aiming for low emission. The student will be able to use and develop the next generation of simulation and visualization technologies for the design of offshore and maritime operations.

After graduating this program the candidate:

has general understanding complex marine operations and their need for special design solutions.
has advanced knowledge within the specified field (master thesis topic)
is able to understand and use proper terminology.

Learning outcome - Skills

After graduating this program the candidate:

can work independently on practical and theoretical problems (find the relevant sources, methods).
is able to work with modern computer programs (CAD programs, CFD programs )is able to design and analyze/simulate machinery- and propulsion systems, as well as ship equipment as for example deck machinery and cargo handling systems.
is able to plan, initiate and execute complex systems engineering projects
is able to manage a product family in a company (from customer relations to product portfolio management)

After graduating this program the candidate:

can analyze relevant academic, professional and research ethical problems
can apply his/her knowledge and skills in new areas in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects
can communicate extensive independent work and master language and terminology of the academic field

Experience-based master's degree in Product and Systems Design - 90 ECTS

Bachelor in mechanical engineering, automation, mechatronics, marine technology, ship design or equivalent, including at least 30 ECTS in mathematics/statistics. Two years documented, relevant experience in product development, engineering and design.

To be eligible to apply you will need to have at least one of the requisites in the list below:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):

Minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test
minimum score of 600 points on the paper based test

IELTS (International English Language Testing Service)

academic test with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
