¿Qué aprenderé?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Geospatial Science and Technology (PGDipGST) programme provides students with foundational experience and knowledge of geospatial technology. Students will be prepared for entry-level geospatial roles, and also for further postgraduate study.

Students learn programming, research analysis, database management, geospatial technology and communication of findings. The programme combines expertise from areas such as Data Science, Computer Science, Geography and Environmental Science.

How do I plan my degree?

The Diploma is comprised of 120 points, including three compulsory courses (45 points), one other GISC-coded course (15 points), and optional courses (60 points).

Subjects and courses

The PGDipGST includes three compulsory courses on spatial analysis technology and programming, plus one other GISC course. Students must also take 60 points of additional courses from a selection that cover topics such as big data, business technologies, human interface technology, industry uses of spatial analysis, and a workplace internship.

Further study

Students may go on to study the Professional Master of Geospatial Science and Technology.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this diploma will be able to fulfil the current geospatial skill shortage in New Zealand and overseas in a range of different industries, including the private sector, government and community organisations.

Students must have qualified for a Bachelor of Arts, or an equivalent degree, and satisfied the prerequisites for the subject concerned. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in that subject are required. English language requirements: IELTS academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; TOEFL (iBT) total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening; TOEFL PBT with a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5; CCEL EAP Level 2 with a minimum B+ grade; CAE or CPE score of 176 with a minimum of 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50; NZCEL Level 5.

Para estudiantes internacionales

Students are required to have completed a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), with a minimum of a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses in a subject relevant to geospatial analysis. Alternatively, students can apply based on three years of relevant professional experience in a related industry.

Students will be approved by the College of Engineering Dean (Academic) based on the standard of their previous studies and work experience.

Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • TOEFL (IBT): Minimum overall score of 90, with a minimum score of 19 in Reading, Listening and Writing.
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): Overall score of 58 and no communicative skills score below 50.

Application deadline: At least 6 months before the planned start date.
