The Master of Science (Research) is an internationally-recognised qualification, suitable for students who want a complete research experience, coupled with taught papers.Psychology is about understanding the behaviour and cognitive processes of people and animals in their physical, social and organisational environment. As a behavioural science, it examines the way behaviour is learned and can be changed. As a social science, it focuses on individuals within the context of families, organisations and other groups, communities, cultures and societies. As a biological science, it studies the senses (hearing, vision, touch) and how the brain and physiological systems relate to behaviour. As a cognitive science it studies perception, attention, memory, thinking and language understanding. The study of development, personality, learning and motivation are also part of Psychology.

Candidates for the Degree must have

  • qualified for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science (Technology) of the University of Waikato with at least a B grade average across the 300 level papers, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
  • qualified for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Waikato in a relevant subject with an average grade of at least B, or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
  • qualified for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences with Honours or Bachelor of Science with Honours of the University of Waikato with at least Second Class Honours (second division) or for a qualification considered by the Academic Board to be equivalent, or
  • demonstrated to the Academic Board that they have adequate training, experience and ability to proceed with the degree, and
  • satisfied the prerequisites for graduate study in the subject(s) being presented for the Degree, at levels considered appropriate by the Academic Board, and
  • be subject to the completion of any qualifying papers or additional work as may be required by the Academic Board, either prior to admission or concurrently.

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS - Overall score of at least 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in any band), or
  • TOEFL iBT - score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition - overall score of 90 with a Writing score of 21, or
  • a PTE Academic overall score of 56 with no band less than 46, or
  • a Language Cert International ESOL (LRWS) C1 Expert with an overall high pass and no less than a pass in each skill, or
  • a Language Cert International ESOL (LRWS) B2 Communicator with 38-50 score per skill, or
