Earth Sciences:

The study of Earth Sciences combines geology and physical geography to develop and explore our natural resources and manage natural hazard risk to become better stewards of our environment.

Subject overview

Earth Sciences is a fascinating and relevant subject about the world around us. In our times, there are so many pressures on the planet. This means that scientific study of the Earth is crucial, with geologists playing a vital role in finding and developing resources, as well as working to protect the environment.

Earth Sciences focuses on the physical forces that act on Earth, the chemistry of its materials, and the biology of its past. Our courses cover a diverse range of subjects such as volcanology, geothermal energy, paleo-climates, economic geology, natural hazards, applied geophysics and various rock and mineral forming processes.

You will learn skills related to critical and spatial thinking, field observations, laboratory work and quantitative techniques.

Where could this programme take you?

Because science plays a vital role in addressing the key issues that confront us and future generations, studying the Sciences opens up a wide range of career opportunities. If you have been away from study for a while, the GradDipSci provides an opportunity to learn about new developments in your field of expertise.
