The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a professional doctorate that provides an opportunity for experienced medical clinicians to undertake advanced study and research.

Programme overview

The MD is a professional postgraduate doctorate involving advanced study and research. This research can directly investigate current clinical and practice issues.

Completing this degree enables candidates to provide leadership in the profession through their advancement and dissemination of knowledge. The degree may be undertaken on or off campus and may report research that has been undertaken prior to enrolment for the degree if it hasn’t been submitted as part of a previous degree or diploma.

Programme structure

During an MD, you will usually undertake research for three to four years full time. Part time candidates would be expected to complete their MD within 8 years.

On possible to the MD programme, you will be enrolled provisionally.

By the end of your first year, you must meet a number of goals to be confirmed into the MD programme.

After confirmation, you will continue to work on your research before submitting your thesis for examination, usually after three years and within four years of your start date. The examination process may include an oral exam.

There is a provision for candidates to report on original research completed before possible to the MD programme, provided it has not been submitted as part of a previous degree or diploma.

The research undertaken during your MD can be directly applied toward clinical and practice issues. Completing this degree enables candidates to provide leadership in the profession through their advancement and dissemination of knowledge.

You must have completed a significant research project such as a dissertation or thesis, at university level. You need to have completed a postgraduate bachelors (honours) degree with a University of Auckland equivalent B+ grade, or a masters degree with a University of Auckland equivalent B+ grade in a relevant field. Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) calculator: Grades or marks achieved at other institutions are given a Grade Point Equivalent (GPE) on the University’s 0-9 grading scale. If you have overseas qualifications you will typically need a GPE of 6.0 to obtain entry. IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and no bands less than 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 68 and a writing score of 21; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.

You must demonstrate an ability to research independently, and possess a high level of theoretical understanding. Acceptance is subject to staff availability for supervision, and appropriate resources and facilities.

You must have at least five years’ professional experience in medical practice.
