Provisional entry

A school leaver or an adult applicant who does not meet all of the entry criteria may be given provisional entry to Year One at the discretion of the Head of School.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong motivation and desire to achieve in the food industry.

Those provisional entrants who successfully complete and pass year one will be deemed to have met entry requirements and provisional status will be removed.

Programme specific risks

There are a number of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) issues associated with practical work in areas specific to a commercial hospitality environment. These include, but are not limited to, burns from hot liquids or hot objects and cuts from sharp instruments. You will have access to an orientation booklet which covers the programme specific risks in more detail.

Your workload

Course work for this programme will require approximately 20 hours of directed study in the form of classroom sessions and workshops per week. It is expected that you will spend approximately 20 hours of your own time in self-directed study in order to successfully complete the programme.

Delivery

On campus with practical sessions in our training restaurant. An option is available for those with relevant work experience through the assessment of prior learning facilitation process.

To enter Otago Polytechnic’s, you need to have achieved a secondary school qualification that is equivalent to New Zealand’s NCEA levels (National Certificate of Educational Achievement). High School Graduation Diploma with a minimum C average, plus SAT 1 and SAT II score minimum 500/part. Or the Advanced Placement Exam. IELTS test: Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5; TOEFL paper based test (PBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE); TOEFL internet based test (IBT): Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18); Cambridge english qualifications: B2 First, or B2 First for schools, or C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill; Pearson test of english (ACADEMIC): PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42; Language Certificate: C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill; OET: Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests; Trinity ISE: ISE II with no less than distinction in any band

Students need to have achieved a secondary school qualification that is equivalent to New Zealand’s NCEA levels (National Certificate of Educational Achievement). Entry requirements vary from country to country.

*Due to Covid-19 disruption, if you studied and achieved NCEA Level 3 during 2020 you only need 12 credits per Level 3 subject (i.e. a total of 36 credits).

If you do not hold the above qualifications, you must demonstrate equivalent qualifications/experience. Mature applicants with work and life experience are encouraged to apply.
