What will you learn?

The Master’s specialisation International Economics & Development is theoretically unique in that we not only deal with the problems that poor countries face, but also with interesting new developments taking place in the Global South. We will discuss the rise of the BRIC countries, concentrating on both the potential they have as well as the challenges they face. We will also look at unique new economic phenomena within developing countries. Using recent theoretical insights and modern empirical methods, you will be actively involved in comparative research on issues in developing countries such as the impact of globalisation on economic growth, corruption, the education of children, child labour and women’s empowerment.

Scientific and societal relevance go hand in hand in this programme. We address contemporary issues like child labour, women’s empowerment, human development, children’s schooling and economic growth by evaluating societal developments with the help of sound academic theories. We not only discuss pressing issues of today but also issues we believe will be pressing in the near future.

Upon completing the Master’s programme in International Economics & Development, you will be knowledgeable about recent developments in the field. You will be an up-and-coming professional that is able to:

Report independently on various issues in international economics and development, including state of the art empirical and theoretical studies.

Your admission into this programme depends on your previous education. You are admissible if you have a completed:

A Bachelor’s degree in a similar (or related) field from another research university with a fair number of courses in your preferred specialisation. Your degree must be equivalent to a Dutch Research University diploma.

All other students need one of the following certificates (All certificates may not be older than two years).

TOEFL iBT: ≥ 90 & subscores ≥ 22
IELTS Academic: ≥ 6,5 overall. Subscores ≥ 6,0, writing subscore ≥ 6,5
Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 proficiency: C or higher
