About Faculty

The Faculty of Biotechnology and Bimolecular Sciences (Biotech UPM) was established on 1st August 2004 with the merger of two departments, the Department of Biotechnology (from the Faculty of Food Science and Biotechnology) and the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology (from the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies). With the formation of Biotech UPM, all activities involving biotechnology in UPM are organized under one administration.

Nanobiotechnology combines the fields of biotechnology and nanoscience. It involves the study of biomolecules from cells such as proteins and nucleic acids to fabricate functional nanostructures. This new technology has a wide range of applications which include medical implants, microelectronic silicon substrates, biosensors, diagnostic tools, drug delivery particles, transducers, amplifiers, nanomechanics and computing. In the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, they have successfully delivered cargo into mammalian cells by using nanoparticles derived from hepatitis B virus and filamentous bacteriophages.

The applicant should possess: a Master Degree (with coursework) in a relevant field with a minimum grade average of B, or a Master Degree with thesis in a relevant field, or an outstanding Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.750 (such an applicant may apply direct admission even without a Master Degree). Admission into the programme is subject to any other requirement specified by the Faculty/Institute. An applicant from a local public university who is in the final semester of his undergraduate study programme may be considered for provisional admission provided his current CGPA or its equivalent satisfies the graduate programme admission requirements. English Language Requirements: International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) Band 6.0; Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL), Paper Based - 550; 400 for Band 4.0 only for Malay language, Arabic, Chinese Literature, internet-based test (IBT)- 79-80.

550 for the TOEFL Paper-based Test (Academic Version); or

Any English Language Test which is equivalent to B2 in Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
