About Faculty
Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP) was established from the merger of the Institute of Bio composites and the Rain Forest Academy, following the Research University status awarded to UPM in January 2007. INTROP consists of three laboratories, Laboratory of Sustainable Bio resource Management (BIOREM), Laboratory of Bio composites Technology (BIOCOMPOSITE), and Laboratory of Biopolymers and Derivatives (BADs).
This field encompasses basic research on bio fibre, manufacturing of bio composites and design of bio composites for building components and furniture. The basic bio fibre research aspects that are emphasized include characterisations of bio fibre and quality enhancements of bio fibre. Bio composites aspects that are emphasised include optimizations of processing variables, formulations and utilizations of new resin binder, and product evaluations. Design aspects that are emphasised include developments of 3D and 4D models using CAD/CAID methodology, applications of bio composites materials and structures in the Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and furniture, and PLC (Product-Life-Cycle) cost analysis.
