Programme Aims and Objectives

The programme aims to

  • train professional housing managers for both the public and private housing sectors in Hong Kong and the Region;
  • equip graduates with thorough understanding of the social, political, economic, legal and physical institutions within the context of housing management; and
  • furnish graduates with high level analytic and management skills for the personal enhancement of the graduate in their future career as well as further development of the profession.

The programme is taught in part-time evening/block mode over 6 semesters, including 2 summer semesters (normally 24 months). Classes are usually be conducted on selected weekday evenings or block teachings in summer.

All students are first admitted to the MAHS programme (30 credits units). Students who have successfully completed 24 credits units (excluding the MAHS Capstone Project and Research Methods for Housing Studies) as prescribed in the syllabus are eligible to apply for graduation as PGD as an exit.

The programme comprises of 9 core housing courses and a flexible list of elective courses.

Professional Accreditation

The programme has already obtained full recognition from the Hong Kong Institute of Housing (HKIH) and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH). The two institutes are regarded as partners in the educational process. Upon completion of the practical experience requirements and passing of examinations prescribed by professional bodies, graduates will be eligible for admission as corporate members of the HKIH and the CIH. Corporate members of HKIH and CIH are eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Housing Manager.

To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

Priority will be given to those applying with relevant work experience and those who can provide evidence of academic or professional attainment acceptable for this purpose by the University.

In addition, you must also satisfy the English proficiency requirements stipulated by the University if your undergraduate medium of instruction was not in English.

Credit-transfer for relevant courses will be granted on an individual basis provided that these courses fulfill the necessary requirements as stipulated in the Academic Regulations, that is, a maximum of 9 credits for Master of Arts in Housing Studies (MAHS) degree and 7 credits for the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD).

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
  • Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • Other equivalent qualifications.
