In this inter-faculty joint degree program, students may complete the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) degree in conjunction with the Master of Arts (MA) in Digital Humanities degree. This is a thesis-based degree program, which typically extends over three years of full-time study.

Program Requirements:

The School of Library and Information Studies and the Digital Humanities program offer a combined MA/MLIS that students can complete within three years. The combined program is offered on-site at the University of Alberta and requires ?45 and a thesis for completion (?18 from MA program and ?27 from MLIS program).

Please Note: Students in an on-campus MLIS program cannot take courses designated for students in the online MLIS. Course listings in Bear Tracks will indicate if a course is restricted to online or on-campus MLIS students.

LIS 502: Organization of Information

LIS 503: Reference and Information Services

LIS 504: Leadership and Management Principles for Library and Information Services

LIS 505: Research Methods for Library and Information Studies

LIS 597: Seminar in Advanced Research

Required MA Courses:

DH 500: Survey of Digital Humanities

DH 510: Theoretical Issues in Digital Humanities

DH 520: Technical Concepts & Approaches in Digital Humanities

DH 530: Project Design & Management in Digital Humanities

All students must take LIS 501, DH 500, and DH 520 in the first term of their program, as these provide a context for all of the other courses in the program.

Note: The MLIS requirement to complete two (?3 or equivalent) designated Information Technology courses is fulfilled by content covered in the Digital Humanities courses.

Tentative Course Schedule:

Students will typically take three courses per term at ?3 each (or equivalent) with the sixth and final term designated for the thesis.

Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required. English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Total score of 90 with a score of at least 21 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5, with at least 5.5 on each test band; Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) - Overall 70 with at least 60 on each subtest; Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - 61 with a minimum band score of 60.

Completion of any four-year undergraduate degree (excluding a Bachelor degree in Library Sciences) from an accredited academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. "Completion" means you must have completed all of your courses in the program and that your final grades appear on your transcript. Note that your degree must have already been conferred and confirmed on your academic transcript.

A GPA of 3.0 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your last ?60.

English language requirement:

TOEFL: Passing score of 100 (Internet-based) with a minimum of 21 on each of the individual skill areas.
IELTS Academic: Minimum overall band score of 7.5, with at least 7.0 on each band.
CAEL: Overall minimum score of 70, with at least 70 on each subtest.
PTE Academic: Overall minimum score of 64.
MELAB: Minimum score of 90.
