¿Qué aprenderé?

Evidence-based and data-driven decision making increasingly characterize operational and funding decisions in the healthcare sector. As a result, there is a growing demand for employees with sound data analytic skills.

This program enables students to become proficient in the practices and techniques used in the employment of healthcare informatics. Students learn how to leverage health data, which anticipates and responds to organizations’ needs. They acquire skills to analyze quantitative and qualitative information to help facilitate health care delivery, patient safety and health, and decision making within and across healthcare facilities and organizations. A focus on the blending of three skills areas: technical, inter-professional and “soft” interpersonal skills, makes this program distinct.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

collect, analyse, and interpret a variety of health data sets to respond to a healthcare organization's needs.

apply health analytics and business intelligence tools to support evidence-informed practice.

evaluate health information practices, policies and processes to support and inform client and community care, and organizational goals and operations.

ensure compliance with legal health obligations, and professional and organizational standards as they relate to the privacy, security, and confidentiality of personal health information.

work professionally and collaboratively with stakeholders and as a member of an inter-professional team, to enhance the quality of health information and its impact on client care.

utilize health data and change-management strategies to predict possible outcomes and to inform decision-making.

co-ordinate the planning, implementation, management and evaluation of team projects by applying project management, quality improvement methods, and use of technology to support health care operations.

Employment Opportunities

Upon graduation, job vacancies are available in northern Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Graduates can find employment in a range of positions that include project manager, health information clerk, quality officer, quality improvement coordinator, health records administrator and performance improvement analyst.

International graduates may benefit from the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, recently announced in Thunder Bay.
