Length of program

The minimum period of registration for a PhD degree is four terms. Degree requirements must be satisfied within four calendar years following the date of admission into the PhD program, unless extensions are approved by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Engineering. Requests for extension must be supported by a written departmental recommendation along with a realistic timetable for the completion of the degree, and evidence of adequate progress in research. Extensions are not granted automatically and will be refused in the case of inadequate progress. University of Waterloo regulations stipulate that approval of an extension past three extended terms is at the discretion of the Associate Provost, Graduate Studies.

Applicants must have a 75% overall standing, or equivalent, in the previous degree is the minimum requirement for admission to a PhD program. In addition, candidates must demonstrate other superior qualifications, such as advanced research ability. It should be noted that many departments have standards higher than the minimum. Some departments admit exceptional applicants directly into the PhD from an Honours undergraduate program; most admit from the Master's into the PhD; and in certain instances a candidate who has successfully completed one PhD may be admitted into a second PhD in a complementary area. Other English language requirements: Paper-Based  TOEFL(PBT): 580; MELAB - Michigan English Language Assessment Battery: 85,80 per section For co-op programs: speaking 3; CAEL - Canadian Academic English Language Assessment: 70, 60 per band, Writing 70,Speaking 70; PTE Academic - Pearson Test of English: 63, Writing 65, Speaking 65; EFAS - English for Academic Success: 75% overall in 400 level with 75% in each of academic, oral, and writing.

Minimum admission requirements

  • Excellent background preparation and academic achievement in prior degrees, usually a relevant (i.e. thesis-based) Master's degree with an 80% average from a recognized university.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate research problems and to execute the research required to solve problems (such as a Master of Applied Science (MASc) research thesis or published scientific/technical papers).
  • Three references, at least two from academic sources that are able to comment upon academic preparation and research ability
