Our department is interdisciplinary, comparative, and critically engaged. Our graduate programs are small, collegial and selective. We pride ourselves on the faculty support we offer our graduate students. Many of our doctoral students successfully secure scholarships from major granting agencies, and go on to post-doctoral fellowships, employment in academia, research, policy, and the non-profit sectors.

Our graduate students are active and engaged scholars, who disseminate their research in a variety of ways. For example, between 2009 and 2012, Sociology and Social Anthropology (SoSA) graduate students presented a total of 38 papers at conferences and workshops.

Program Structure:

The doctoral program is designed to be completed in four years, although many students in our disciplines find that their fieldwork and writing require them to take a fifth or even sixth year to complete the degree.

The goal of the first year is to develop and broaden the student’s intellectual foundation and to permit the department to assess the student’s strengths and weaknesses. During the first year, the student registers for six half classes.

The second year is spent preparing for and writing the comprehensive examinations. By the end of that year, the student shall have written three interrelated comprehensive examinations, normally in theory, in methods, and in a substantive area. The student is required to pass all three comprehensive examinations in order to continue in the PhD program.

The student begins the third year by developing a formal dissertation proposal, which is presented to the department Colloquium. The student also must demonstrate a working knowledge of a language other than English which is relevant to the student’s studies and research.

The fourth year is devoted to writing the thesis. In accordance with Faculty regulations, an oral defense of the dissertation is required.

Students will be considered for acceptance into the PhD in Health program only after completion of a Master’s degree from an accredited program. Applicants who have completed a research (thesis-based) Master’s will be eligible for the two-year residency PhD program and those who have completed a non-thesis Master’s program are eligible for the three-year residency PhD program. Cumulative GPA of 3.7 based on both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. For International applicants, an English Language Competency score of TOEFL >100 (Internet) or IELTS 7.5.

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

English language proficiency test score:

  • Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 92
  • Written TOEFL: 580
  • MELAB: 85
  • IELTS: 7
  • CAEL: 70 with no band score lower than 60
  • Dalhousie College of Continuing Education (CCE) : A-
  • Pearson English Test PTE Academic: overall score of 65 and nothing below 54
