¿Qué aprenderé?

Sheridan's Chemical Laboratory Technician diploma program provides excellent facilities with current technology and many opportunities for hands-on experience. You'll work directly with the same sophisticated instruments that are used in research and industry, while learning to apply the theories of the chemical sciences.

Flexible options for study

Course credits can be transferred (either before or after graduation) directly to the Chemical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology - Environmental or Environmental Technician programs at Sheridan, making the Chemical Laboratory Technician option extremely flexible.

Courses to help you become career-ready

Our courses will help you become career-ready. You'll study:

  • Instrumental analysis and analytical chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Organic and inorganic chemistry
  • Laboratory techniques
  • Environmental science

Additional information

Environmental services, energy, health care, and other rapidly growing sectors rely on chemical analysis and research – and they all need laboratory technician college graduates with specialized skills for the chemical lab.

The Chemical Lab Technician diploma program begins with a solid academic foundation with courses in organic and inorganic chemistry, calculus and advanced science.

Once in the workforce, the duties of graduates may include:

  • Analyzing samples.
  • Preparing samples and solutions, making and purifying chemicals.
  • Technical sales for laboratory equipment and supplies.

Some graduates continue their study at university to obtain degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering and related disciplines. Depending on the university, and the choice of program, they may receive transfer credits for their study at Sheridan.

Graduates have completed all the academic requirements for professional certification with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT). Additional requirements for certification exist and are established by OACETT. Graduates are also eligible for membership in the Chemical Institute of Canada.

Career Opportunities

Chemical Laboratory Technician graduates may work with chemists and engineers in research and development labs, quality control and technical service labs, government agencies and educational institutions.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Apply mathematical, physical and chemical concepts to routine tasks such as the analysis and synthesis of chemical compounds and samples.
  • Conduct basic manual quantitative and qualitative analyses accurately, using prescribed laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare organic and inorganic compounds using standard synthetic and purification procedures.
  • Perform routine statistical calculations to report the results of analyses.
  • Perform instrumental chemical analysis and report the quantitative/qualitative results.
  • Apply basic computer skills relevant to the chemical laboratory technology field.
  • Perform established Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures to ensure that processes remain within designated limits.
  • Perform all assigned work in compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental law, legislation and regulations; established policies and procedures; and in accordance with ethical principles.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to chemical laboratory technology.
  • Use interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to the chemical laboratory technology environment.
  • Develop a plan for continued professional growth.
