¿Qué aprenderé?

Cape Breton is the only place in North America where you can find living Celtic Culture. This means our CBU program is as authentic as you can get this side of the pond.

Students get the chance to look at the impact of Celtic Culture dating back thousands of years to present day. They analyze the contribution of Celtic people to Western civilization and Cape Breton’s cultural heritage. They also have the unique opportunity to travel on exchange to Scotland, the birthright of Celtic Culture, to really get the full Celtic experience and round out their education.

What Is The Study of Celtic Culture?

Celtic Culture is an interdisciplinary study of the Celts. Through music, history, language, traditions and literature, students get to really dig in and explore the rich history of Celtic Culture.

CBU offers the perfect backdrop for students looking to pursue their Celtic interests or those wanting to start a new cultural journey. The university is located in the heart of Cape Breton Island, home to the only Gaelic community outside of Europe and the last of the numerous Gaidhealtachds (Gaelic-speaking areas) that once existed throughout North America.

Why Study Celtic Culture At CBU?

Learn by living the culture on Cape Breton Island.

Celtic Culture students have the option of spending a year abroad at any of the universities CBU has an exchange agreement with, including Sabhal Mòr Ostaig (the Gaelic College on the Isle of Skye in Scotland), the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and more. Explore the Exchange Programs at CBU.

Thousands of Scottish and Irish immigrants arrived in Cape Breton during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their descendants have done a remarkable job of not just of preserving the culture, but augmenting and adapting it, resulting in Cape Breton’s unique and internationally recognized cultural identity.

Immerse yourself in Cape Breton’s lively Celtic Culture. Take in the annual Celtic Colors International Festival, participate in weekly traditional music sessions at Blue Mist Tavern and Governors Pub, try your hand at Gaelic poetry, or visit the Highland Village Museum.
