The Master of Surgery by research at University of Melbourne is a program in which a candidate undertakes research in a specific aspect of surgery under academic supervision.
This course is available to medical graduates of at least two years standing and not less than two years experience as a medical officer in a hospital affiliated to an appropriate university for the purpose of teaching.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Research Masters degrees at the University of Melbourne are designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research.

To be considered for entry, you must have:
completed an approved medical degree of at least two years standing with a minimum H2A average or higher; and
not less than two years’ experience as a medical officer in a hospital affiliated to an appropriate university for the purpose of teaching; and
completed the first part of the relevant medical colleges’ specialist training program or its equivalent.
English language requirements:
IELTS (academic English Only): 7.0 overall, with written 7 and no band less than 6.0;
TOEFL (paper-based test): 600 +, TWE 5.0;
TOEFL (internet-based test): 94 + Writing 27; Speaking 18; Reading 13; Listening 13;
Pearson Test of English (Academic): 65 +, written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50
Cambridge English: Advanced/ Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 185 + no less than 185 in Writing and 169 in each other skill.
