When you study a Master of Science (Health Science) at Southern Cross University, you’ll be contributing to a key area of research in the School of Health and Human Sciences.

The School has a large regional footprint that extends from Coffs Harbour to the Gold Coast and across all facets of regional and rural health.

Other targeted research areas include multidisciplinary approaches in health and human sciences, and research training under the broad areas of nursing and midwifery, health workforce development, brain, behaviour and cognition, social perception, and exercise, health and human performance.

Research Highlight

A study by Southern Cross University researchers looking at older adults who move to independent living units in regional Australia was published in the Australian Journal of Psychology. The study found that any sense of loss of day-to-day autonomy, privacy and purpose was compensated by increased feelings of safety and security


A Masters by Thesis work must show evidence of competence in research and scholarship including:

Reviewing literature in a critical and focused manner
Deploying analytic, comparative and critically reflective skills as appropriate
Gathering and analysing material and interpreting results in an informed and competent manner
Utilising and justifying appropriate methodologies, techniques and processes.

The Thesis must be clearly, accurately and cogently written and suitably documented. The work must demonstrate originality and a thorough understanding of the field of study.

Research proposal

Staff from the Faculty of Health are engaged in a range of research activities across the disciplines of nursing, midwifery, allied health, clinical sciences, clinical exercise physiology, exercise science, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, public health and social sciences.

The Faculty encourages multidisciplinary approaches in health and human sciences research and research training, under the broad areas of:

Exercise, health and human performance
Health workforce development
Human behaviour and communications
Nursing and midwifery
Health pedagogical research
Mental health and wellbeing.

Applicants without a degree but with substantial relevant work experience may be admitted. Other English Language Requirements accepted: TOEFL score of 550 (no band less than 4.5 in TWE); or PTE Academic score of 50; or CAE score of 52 or comparable.

Admission is subject to availability of facilities and supervision.

Applicants must:

Possess a degree equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from the University
Satisfy additional requirements, if any, that may be prescribed by the Dean (Graduate Studies).
