This course was developed by TAFE SA to respond to the workforce development needs of the civil and structural consulting industry in South Australia. Designed in collaboration with industry, the course prepares you to become a design drafter. As a design drafter you will be preparing drawings, documentation and specifications, inspecting works and estimating costs.
Course Notes
This qualification has provisional accreditation by Engineers Australia. Graduates of this course are eligible for migration skills assessment by Engineers Australia. The occupational outcome of this assessment is in the Engineering Associate (Draftsperson) category. The specific occupation code depends on the program studied and on the Engineers Australia guidelines. See the Engineers Australia website for further details.
This course is offered in blended study mode. This means that you learn in a mixture of classroom and online environments. On campus learning will be scheduled but online learning can provide more flexibility. Lecturer support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
The Associate Degree will be taught 30% at Regency Campus and 70% at Tonsley Campus, and some classes may be held in the evening. More details will be provided upon commencement into the Associate Degree.
International students who do not have the Maths subject requirement at Year 12 level (or the overseas equivalent) will be required to complete the Certificate III in Engineering-Technical to satisfy the maths entry for this Associate Degree. The Certificate III in Engineering - Technical will provide a foundation of Maths to prepare the student for success in the Associate Degree.
As part of the Associate Degree program, TAFE SA will provide work experience and/or industry-based project opportunities. While optional, these activities, will give you first-hand experience of the workplace, allowing you to test your skills and make valuable industry contacts.

Civil and Structural Engineering underpins the planning, design and construction of private and public buildings and facilities, bridges and roads, water infrastructure and more. The industry has two major branches: design (also known as engineering consulting) and construction. The Associate Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering (Design Drafting) was developed by TAFE SA to respond to the workforce development needs of the engineering consulting industry in South Australia. This industry is in need of specialized highly trained paraprofessional staff. You will work as a design drafter or technical officer supporting engineers. Your work may involve preparing drawings, documentation and specifications, inspecting works and cost estimation.
